National Board approves Kinneret promenade

SPNI shore coordinator Nir Papai: The real test will be the state’s readiness to allocate resources to the path.

The National Board for Planning and Building last week approved a 35-kilometer pedestrian path around the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee). The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) initiated the path. The path will cover over half the lake’s circumference, and will provide the public with free and continuous access near the water line.

Many lakes around the world have such paths, including Lake Tahoe in the US and Lake Ontario in Canada.

Youth groups around Israel, including haredi (ultra-Orthodox), kibbutz youth, Israeli Arabs, Palestinians, and high-school students in the Kinneret region, volunteered to help blaze the trail for the path.

SPNI department of nature and environmental preservation sea and shore coordinator Nir Papai said that the real test would be the state’s readiness to allocate resources to the path.
