Jerusalem railway station to become transportation museum

The Jerusalem Development Authority will promote a five-kilometer jogging path and sports facilities along the old railway tracks.

The Israel Land Administration (ILA), Jerusalem Municipality, and Israel Railways have agreed that the ILA will designate the Khan historic Jerusalem railway station for temporary public use in a joint municipality-Israel Railways project for five years.

The three government bodies will use the building as a museum for the history of transportation in Jerusalem. The site will also house an information center for the Jerusalem light railway. The Khan building has been slated for preservation as a national building.

The ILA says that if the project is successful, the agreement will probably be extended past five years. The agreement stipulates that if admission is charged for a museum on the premises, the ILA will be paid 2% of the value of the land annually. If commercial elements are included on the premises, the ILA will charge 5% per year.

The municipality is also planning to have the Jerusalem Development Authority promote a five-kilometer jogging path and sports facilities between the Teddy Kollek stadium in Malha and the Khan station, along the old railway tracks. Sources close to the deal said that Arcadi Gaydamak plans to contribute to the jogging path. Jerusalem municipal engineer Uri Sheetrit said that the project would be carried out during the current working year.
