Gov’t to set up Pal-Kal team

The engineering team will submit to the Minister of the Interior within 12 months recommendations for guidelines for dealing with buildings built using the Pal-Kal method.

The cabinet last week decided to set up a team of engineers to deal with the issue of buildings built using the Pal-Kal method. The team was constituted following recommendations by the Zeiler state investigative committee on the safety of structures and building sites. The committee was established following the Versailles Hall disaster in Jerusalem on May 24, 2001, which killed 23 people and injured 377.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ehud Olmert submitted the decision to the cabinet. The engineering team will have a NIS 15 million budget in 2002 prices.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs planning department will head the team, which will submit to the Minister of the Interior within 12 months recommendations for guidelines for dealing with buildings built using the Pal-Kal method, including monitoring, inspections, and repairs.
