Foie gras ban takes effect: Geese slaughterhouses fire 200

Growers: Farms will be set up in Jordan and the Palestinian Authority to meet the vacuum created in Israel’s goose liver industry.

The Avaz Hakesef slaughterhouse in Benyamina and the Progress slaughterhouse in Petah Tikva have sent pink slips to 200 employees. The lay-offs will come into effect in mid-April, when the government decision to close down Israel’s goose industry comes into effect. The slaughterhouses’ employees come from areas with severe unemployment, and few job opportunities.

Geese Growers Association secretary Hai Benyamini told “Globes”, “The lay-offs at the slaughterhouses is the first step in the economic disaster about to hit everything connected with the industry.” He said geese growers had invested huge sums in developing the industry, and were about to face legal claims for breach of contract by Israeli banks and commercial parties.

A group of businesspeople is arranging to import kosher goose liver from geese slaughterhouses in Hungary and France. Farms will also shortly be set up in Jordan and the Palestinian Authority to meet the vacuum created in Israel’s goose liver industry.
