El Al to launch self-service check-in counters in May

Online check-in allows passengers to use the fast lane to deposit their suitcases, without waiting in line.

El Al Israel Airlines Ltd. (TASE: ELAL) will install self-service check-in counters at Ben Gurion Airport in May. The counters will use person’s credit card and passport to eliminate waiting in line for a seat.

El Al CEO Haim Romano said the goal of the new service was to save waiting time at check-in counters, enabling passengers to pick their own seats on the plane. He said 100 passengers a day use the Internet to check in. These passengers receive a $25 coupon at James Richardson duty-free shops and a coupon for a cup of coffee. The coupons are intended to encourage the public to use this service, which also reduces the number of passengers waiting in line that El Al has to handle.

Online check-in allows passengers to use the fast lane to deposit their suitcases, without waiting in line. Romano said the service saves passengers 10 to 30 minutes waiting in line.
