Most employees working part-time do so voluntarily.
The Bank of Israel says the increase in part-time jobs in recent years is a negative development that is a primary cause of the rise in poverty.
The bank adds, however, that most employees working part-time do so voluntarily, and do not want to work more. The proportion of students, young singles and couples with part-time jobs is fairly low. For these people, part-time work is not a reflection of poverty, but a temporary situation lasting only a few years.
The problem is the 15% of households with children, where the breadwinner has a low-paying part-time job.
