Ministry proposes airport master-plan

The plan is designed to meet the needs of the Israeli economy in 2030.

The Ministry of Transport is promoting a master-plan for Israel's airports designed to meet the economy's demands in 2030. The plan will provide answers on several matters, among them the relocation of the airport at Eilat, the construction of an airport at Megiddo, the expansion of Haifa Airport.

Under the plan, the Israel Airports Authority will map out the requirements, in accordance with Ministry of Transport policy. The plan itself will be drawn up by the Ministry of the Interior.

Last week, Ministry of Transport director-general Gideon Siterman met Vice Premier and Minister of Regional Cooperation Shimon Peres, who conveyed Jordan's aspiration to operate a joint Israeli-Jordanian airport. Following the meeting, Siterman announced that he intended to meet representatives of the Kingdom of Jordan, and that he would try to promote the construction of such an airport together with them. Siterman said this was a vital step, since the land on which the current Eilat Airport is sited is needed for the city's development as a tourist destination.
