Japan to invest $100m in Jericho agroindustry zone

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants Japan to play an active role in the Peace Valley.

Japan will invest $100 million in a joint Jordanian-Palestinian-Israeli agroindustrial zone on both banks of the Jordan River near Jericho, announced a mini-summit of the three countries hosted by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo. Vice Premier and Minister of Galilee and Negev Development Shimon Peres, Palestinian Authority chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, and Jordanian King Abdullah II’s special representative Faruq Kasrawi attended the summit.

Abe said fostering economics would contribute towards regional stability, and that Japan wanted to play an active role in various projects, including an agroindustrial zone and an airport in Jordan for exporting produce, and the training of thousands of people in modern agricultural techniques. He plans to call on Japanese companies to participate in tenders for Peace Valley projects.

Peres said that Israel had declared the Peace Valley as a national project, and that together it would be possible to create an atmosphere that would foster international investment. “A modern economy, and the raising of living standards will create a climate for diplomatic progress, and the achievement of a settlement for the benefit of all nations in the region,” he said.
