Printer co Kornit raises $3.5m from EFI

Kornit Digital makes digital inkjet printers for textiles.

Electronics for Imaging Inc. (Nasdaq: EFII) has made a $3.5 million strategic investment in Israeli start-up Kornit Digital Ltd. EFI develops color digital print servers, superwide format printers and inks, and print management solutions. It has a market cap of $2 billion. Kornit develops and sells high-end industrial digital inkjet printers and inks for the textile industry, primarily for the finished garment and apparel printing markets.

Kornit was founded in 2003 by chairman Moshe Nur, the founder of Nur Macroprinters Ltd. (Pink Sheets:NURMF.PK). The company offers inkjet printing of high-quality images on T-shirts and other clothes at speeds of up to 200 articles of clothing an hour. The company’s technology can print on a range of fabrics using special inks and solvents that generate a high-separation picture in living color that does not run in the wash.

Kornit has kept a low profile since it was founded and has not raised capital from venture capital funds. The company has 100 customers, mostly in North America. One major customer is CafePress.com, a leading e-commerce marketer of customized printed T-shirts and other apparel.
