Intel launches new mobile platform

Parts of the Santa Rosa processor were developed at Intel's R&D centers in Israel.

The battle between Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) for control of the chip market continues. Intel announced yesterday the launch of a new version of the Centrino processor for laptops.

The new platform, which includes the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors and a new chipset, offers a number of technological advantages in communications, power consumption, graphics, performance, as well as improvements in IT systems management designed primarily for enterprise solutions.

Intel VP mobility group and general manager Mobile Processor Group Roni Friedman said, "The Santa Rosa systems delivers improvements in each of the vectors that Intel focuses on - performance, wireless communications, battery time and the capacity for building thin systems. " Some parts of the latest system were developed at Intel's R&D centers in Israel, which also contributed to previous systems. According to Ariel Yogev, manager of wireline communications component development and R&D manager at Intel's center in Jerusalem, Intel's Israel centers developed two parts of the new systems: the wireless communications components, which were developed at the Haifa R&D center, and the engine management components, which were developed in Jerusalem.

The improvements in management include an ability to detect when one of the two cores is not functioning, and thereby improve performance levels. Another interesting component is the "Turbo Memory" which, according to Intel, "allows access to frequently used software applications twice as fast and reduces the amount of time it takes to turn on, or boot up a laptop by 20%." The development of this capacity was enabled with the help of Microsoft, which also supports it in its new Vista operating system.

A large number of computer manufacturers have already announced that they will integrate the new platform in new products due to be shipped later in the year.
