Internet purchases in Israel represent substantial sums

75% of Israeli web users visited an online shopping site.

Average spending on online purchases by Israelis is NIS 2,185, according to the new shopping online index compiled by Shiluv - Market Research and Strategic Planning Ltd. The first index, covering the last three months, found that 75% of surfers visited e-commerce sites and two-thirds of them made an online purchase.,

Shiluv chairman Israel Oleinik said that the most frequently visited e-commerce sites sold appliances. Two-thirds of surfers visited these sites. Computer sites were the second most popular, visited by 45% of surfers. He said that 20% of surfers visited local and foreign tourist services sites during August.

A breakdown of results show that the Internet is mainly used for large purchases. Only 16% of purchases were less than NIS 200, 20% were between NIS 201-500; 15% were between NIS 501-1,000, and 24% were larger than NIS 1,000. The remaining respondents did not know how much they spent.

Two-thirds of visitors to e-commerce sites bought goods online in the past month. The most frequent online purchases were appliance - 40% of all purchases. The average online appliance purchase was NIS 2,700. 25% of all online purchases were computers, at an average purchase of NIS 3,409. Olenik says that online purchases of computers raised the average of all online purchases.

The average online purchase for entertainment or cultural events (tickets for movies, shows, or concerts) was NIS 1,176. The average purchase of domestic or foreign tourism products was NIS 6,431. The average purchase of books and magazines was NIS 1,714, for music and movies - NIS 1,219, and gadgets - NIS 1,635.
