Channel 1 goes cellular

The service will cost a regular cellular call with no extra charge.

Channel 1 is moving forward with the launch today of its cellular content service which will be available by dialing *11. The service will enable viewers to watch Channel 1 news bulletins around the clock for the cost of a regular cellular call with no extra charges for online viewing.

The *11 service will enable users to view the Channel 1 "Mabat" news magazine as well news bulletins in English and Arabic and weather forecasts. Also available will be updates from the "Voice of Israel" newsroom. The new service will use Video-on-Demand technology, which will enable viewers to scroll through the program listings on the keypads of their handsets and also replay selected items.

The Israel Broadcasting Authority, which operates Channel 1, says that the new service is unique in that users will no longer have to log on to their provider's portal and navigate through its drop-down menus.
