500 of Israel's computer centers, which house critical applications and data, are not capable of withstanding a major earthquake, says Alexander Schneider project and engineering manager Yaniv Tahar. He made the comment during a meeting of the earthquake preparedness steering committee.
Alexander Schneider Ltd. estimates the damage from the crash of computer centers at hundreds of millions of shekels. The computer centers at risk belong to banks, telecommunications companies, emergency and rescue services, and government and military offices. Tahar told the steering committee, "Information recovery will be almost impossible, and will be possible only after a great deal of time and the immense investment of resources."
Tahar says that computer centers are liable to crash regardless of the strength of an earthquake. "If an earthquake strikes Israel in the near future, computer centers will crash even if the buildings in which they are located sustain only minor damage," he says. This is because the server cabinets are not protected from tremors, which will damage the servers.
