Renault delays electric car exports

The launch will now be a year later than originally predicted by Project Better Place.

Renault's electric car will not be exported to Israel and other countries until 2011, the company's senior executives said yesterday at a conference in Geneva attended by thousands of agents from across the continent.

The launch will now be a year later than originally predicted by Project Better Place, which is currently building a battery charging infrastructure ahead of the arrival of the cars. As first reported in "Globes", Project Better Place also received the marketing franchise for the electric car, once it is available in Israel.

Reports in the European press quote Renault executives as saying that the car will be based on a longer version of the new gasoline-engine Renault Megane hatchback, which will be launched in 2010. The five-door hatchback was also unveiled at the conference, and many of its internal and external accessories will also be featured in the electric car when it finally hits the market.
