Teledata joins new Bezeq network project

Alcatel-Lucent and maybe ECI Telecom will reportedly participate in the later stages of the NGN project.

Teledata Networks Ltd. will build part of the next-generation network (NGN) at Bezeq The Israeli Telecommunication Co. Ltd. (TASE: BEZQ). The company will join UT Starcom Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSI), which Bezeq selected as the chief contractor for its NGN.

Alcatel-Lucent SA (NYSE; Euronext: ALU) and maybe ECI Telecom Ltd. as well will reportedly participate in the later stages of the project because an upgrade of DSLAM customer modem-network switchboards to IP DSLAM switchboards is sometimes easier than buying a new product.

Teledata's IP DSLAM is a new access gateway that sits in the nearest box to the customer in order to provide faster communications speed. Teledata has worked with Bezeq for years and has 250,000 lines hooked up to its access equipment. It is therefore easier for Bezeq to upgrade the products than replace them.

Last week, Teledata announced a $21 million follow-on contract to supply its BroadAccess 1000 multiservice access gateway to a large Central Asian communications company to expand the latter's network. The systems will provide a will provide a mix of voice, broadband data and IPTV services over a next-generation IP network. The deal follows deployments of BroadAccess IP NGN systems by the operator, providing hundreds of thousands of voice and broadband lines.
