Clalit Health Services plans firing 1,000

The country's largest health fund, and one of Israel's largest employers, will have a deficit of hundreds of millions of shekels in 2009.

Sources inform "Globes" that Clalit Health Services Group is set to fire 1,000 staff. Israel's largest health fund is also one of the country's largest employers. Only employees without tenure will receive dismissal notices.

Clalit CEO Eli Defes today sent a letter to all regional managers and directors of the hospitals owned by the organization asking them to prepare a list of candidates for cutbacks including doctors, representing 3% of Clalit's workforce. Defes made it clear that employees who are being fired should not be summoned for a hearing before Passover.

Defes also wrote that he expected Clalit, which ran a small deficit of NIS 70 million in 2008 to reach a deficit of NIS 755 million in 2009.

Clalit management is hoping that the government may intervene to prevent such a large number of people from being fired.
