Sammy, Eyal Ofer among UK top 10 wealthiest

The Ofers rose in the ranking despite a fall in their wealth.

Sammy and Eyal Ofer were ranked eighth in the list of the UK's wealthiest people published today by the "Sunday Times."

In 2008 the Ofers were ranked 15th with wealth of ₤3.3 billion. This year they climbed seven places despite seeing their wealth shrink to ₤2.67 billion.

The UK newspaper reported that the global financial crisis has wiped out ₤155 billion of the capital held by the UK's 1,000 richest people, amounting to one third of their capital.

The number of billionaires in Britain fell from 75 to 43. The UK's 100 richest people lost ₤92 billion over the past year and only three in the top 100 saw their capital increase.

Lakshmi Mittal and his family topped the list with ₤10.8 billion, down from ₤27.7 billion in 2008. In second place was the Russian Jewish tycoon Roman Abramovich with ₤7 billion down from ₤11.7 billion last year and in third place was the Duke of Westminster with ₤6.5 billion compared with ₤7 billion in 2008.
