WAN optimizer Expand selected by Asia satellite co

IPSTAR is the world’s largest commercial satellite ever launched into orbit and is designed for high-speed communications over an Internet Protocol platform.

Technology developed by WAN optimization firm Expand Networks is being used by Thaicom subsidiary IPSTAR, a provider of satellite broadband services in Asia.

Expand said that the service will ensure fast, resilient, and cost-effective satellite communications for IPSTAR’s corporate customers, placing remote users in virtual proximity of critical business applications to help improve business processes across distributed environments.

Expand’s WAN optimization technology, with integrated space communication protocol standard (SCPS) technology, mitigates the effect of low bandwidth and high latency obstacles that can traditionally impede the speed and performance of applications over satellite links.

Expand Networks APAC VP Steve O’Brien said, “ In Asia Pacific, particularly Australia and New Zealand, we have seen heightened interest amongst service providers for optimizing their offering to better manage the flow of traffic over satellite links."

IPSTAR is the world’s largest commercial satellite ever launched into orbit and is designed for high-speed communications over an Internet Protocol platform. IPSTAR facilitates two-way broadband Internet service and cost-effective solutions for any community or business lacking access to terrestrial line infrastructure, providing instant coverage in blind spot areas.

IPSTAR’s geographical reach covers an area inhabited by 3.2 billion people, or roughly 45 percent of the world’s population. Presently, IPSTAR provides full nationwide broadband satellite service in eleven countries: Australia, Cambodia, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam. IPSTAR Company Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Thaicom Public Company Ltd., which currently operates a fleet of four satellites: THAICOM-1A, THAICOM-2, THAICOM-4 (IPSTAR) and THAICOM-5.

Last August, Expand raised $8.5 million in a funding round led by Intel Capital, and included existing investors.
