Microsoft Israel launches first direct access platform

The product enables Microsoft Corp. to become a player in the SaaS sector.

Microsoft Israel R&D center today launched the Microsoft Corporation's (Nasdaq: MSFT) unified access gateway (UAG) product. The UAG is Microsoft's first Direct Access platform product for the implementation of the company's Access Anyway concept for the Windows 2008 Server R2.

Remote access and UAGs are among the core fields in which Israeli high-tech has a presence, alongside information security, remote support, online advertising, virtualization, and telecommunications. Microsoft Israel is also working on man-machine interfaces. Microsoft corporate VP Moshe Lichtman heads the company's Israel R&D operations.

Microsoft entered the UAG field through its acquisition of DV3 in early 2009 and through collaboration with PrimeSense Ltd. Lichtman says, "I knew about the extent of activity in Israel in ordinary high-tech fields, but I was surprised by the extent of activity in Israel in the relevant fields for games." This latter activity will likely greatly expand.

Microsoft Israel R&D Center also develops secure Virtual Personal Network (VPN) products with SSL encryption, an activity acquired through the acquisition of Whale Communications in 2006. Former Whale executive Ronen Assaf will be responsible for this activity.

The UAG product unveiled today is already used in the Windows 7 operating system to provide PCs with online access to enterprise servers. The product also enables Microsoft to become a player in the Software as a Service (SaaS) sector, where the company has to pay substantial amounts for access licenses for its employees.
