Gov't to authorize 5-year extension for Fischer

A month after the Knesset passed the new Bank of Israel Law, the cabinet will be asked at Sunday's meeting to extend Stanley Fischer's term as Bank of Israel governor.

A month after the Knesset passed the new Bank of Israel Law, the cabinet will asked at Sunday's meeting to approve the term of Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Stanley Fischer by five years. Last month, Fischer acceded to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request to stay for another term, having previously conditioned his consent on passage of the new Bank of Israel Law.

At a press conference last month, Fischer said, "Five years less six weeks ago, I stood emotionally at a ceremony at the President's Residence in Jerusalem, and assumed the job of Governor of the Bank of Israel. I could not have imagined then what would happen during my first term as governor. It has been a very challenging time for me, and we seem to have emerged from it well."
