Defense co Elta wins Asia arms orders

The orders were reportedly placed after the radar system's capabilities were demonstrated in the Israel Navy's interception of the Gaza flotilla last week.

Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI) (TASE: ARSP.B1) subsidiary Elta has won two contracts, worth $33 million altogether, to supply EL/M 2022A airborne maritime surveillance radar systems used by naval reconnaissance aircraft. The orders are from two Asian militaries, which the company did not disclose.

The orders were reportedly placed after the radar system's capabilities were demonstrated in the Israel Navy's interception of the Gaza flotilla last week.

The radar systems are installed in aircraft that monitor a country's territorial waters, and can indentify vessels stationary in or travelling though it, either openly or silently. The system is used in combination with land-borne radar systems. The airborne maritime surveillance radar enables customers to undertake maritime defense actions to protect their territorial waters.

IAI said that media reports say that maritime reconnaissance aircraft equipped with the system were used to monitor the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano, and the huge BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Elta develops electronic warfare equipment for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions, as well as early warning and control (AWACS), homeland security sensors, fire control, airborne and naval self protection systems, and datalink and communications systems.
