Security cos meet Brazil reps ahead of Olympics, World Cup

Export Institute chief Avi Hefetz: Homeland security in Latin America, currently estimated at $2.2 billion, is expected to grow by at least 3% in 2010.

Brazil is already beginning to prepare for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games even as the 2010 World Cup has just gotten underway in South Africa. A delegation of 17 senior airport and transport security officials from Brazil and other Latin American countries are visiting Israel to seek technologies and collaborations with Israeli security companies.

The Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Israeli commercial attaché in Brazil arranged meetings between the delegation and executives of 30 Israeli companies with advanced airport security and management technologies, ahead of the World Cup and Olympic Games in Brazil. Representatives from Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, and other countries are also part of the delegation.

Export Institute director general Avi Hefetz said, "Homeland security in Latin American countries, currently estimated at $2.2 billion, is expected to grow by at least 3% in 2010." He said that there was strong business potential, because Brazil will invest over $3 billion in domestic security projects for the World Cup and Olympic Games.

The Israeli companies presented technologies and systems for biometric facial recognition, luggage inspection, explosives detection and identification, training and simulation, optics, suspect identification, perimeter defense, security planning and management, and other systems.

The companies making the presentations include NICE Systems Ltd. (Nasdaq: NICE; TASE: NICE), Verint Systems Inc. (Pink Sheets: VRNT), Elbit Systems Ltd. (Nasdaq: ESLT; TASE: ESLT) subsidiary Elsec, Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI) (TASE: ARSP.B1) subsidiary Elta Systems, Magal Security Systems Ltd. (Nasdaq: MAGS; TASE: MAGS), Magna BSP Ltd., and Opgal Ltd.
