Teva again ranked top Israeli company

BDI Coface's rankings of the top 500 firms showed more companies profited, but overall profit fell.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Nasdaq: TEVA; TASE: TEVA) again topped the BDI Code of Israel's top 500 companies for 2010, as the company's turnover reached NIS 54.66 billion in 2009 it had and 35,089 employees.

BDI Coface today published its sixth annual BDI Code for 2010, based on companies' results in 2009. 84% of the 500 companies in the BDI Code posted a profit in 2009, compared with 72% in 2008, mostly thanks to the recovery in the business activity in the second half of 2009. However, aggregate revenue of the 500 companies fell 2% to NIS 824 billion in 2009 from NIS 841 billion in 2008. The top 100 companies accounted for 72% of aggregate revenue in 2009, or NIS 590 billion.

The top 500 companies employed 830,000 people in 2009, with the top 100 companies employing 55% of the total. Average revenue per employee was about NIS 1 million. BDI says that there is a tight correlation between a company's ranking and its ranking in the BDI list of best companies to work for. 60 of the companies in the list of best companies to work for are in the top 100 companies in the BDI Code.

BDI co-CEO Eyal Yannai said, "The companies' financial figures show improved profits, indicating that Israeli companies were able to adapt to the crisis, and even took advantage of the period to streamline and strengthen.

Except for Teva, all the other top ten companies in the BDI Code changed their rankings compared with last year. Four companies entered the top ten: Intel Israel, had the biggest gain, rising to 3rd place from 32nd, thanks to the operations of its Fab 28 in Kiryat Gat. Bank Leumi (TASE: LUMI) continued to top Bank Hapoalim (TASE: POLI), in 5th and 6th place, respectively, although Bank Hapoalim leads Bank Leumi in terms of revenue and credit under management. The fourth new entry to the top ten was Clalit Health Services.

Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) (TASE: ELEC.B22) is in 2nd place in the BDI Code, with NIS 18.7 billion revenue and 12,663 employees in 2009. It is followed by Intel Israel, with NIS 13.46 billion revenue and 6,343 employees; Israel Chemicals Ltd. (TASE: ICL), with with NIS 17.91 billion revenue and 10,625 employees; and Bank Leumi, with NIS 11,59 billion revenue and 13,342 employees. Bank Hapoalim, Yitzhak Tshuva's Delek Group Ltd. (TASE: DLEKG) subsidiary Delek Petroleum Ltd. (TASE: DLKP.B7; DLKP.B8), Oil Refineries Ltd. (TASE:ORL), Clalit, and Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI) (TASE: ARSP.B1), are ranked 6th through 10th.
