Barak's wife headed toward prosecution, not fine

Nili Priell sought to conclude the case of her employing a foreign worker without a permit by paying a fine.

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has rejected a request by Nili Priell, the wife of Minister of Defense Ehud Barak, to conclude the case of her employing a foreign worker without a permit, by paying a fine.

Weinstein said that the wrongdoings justified an indictment, and that they could not be concluded through administrative measures, such as a fine. He added that Priell might be summoned for further questioning.

Weinstein's aide, Adv. Raz Nezri, informed Priell of these points by letter today, in response to her request earlier this week to pay an administrative fine to bring the case to a close. Nezri wrote, "In accordance with the guidelines that apply to the prosecutors at the Immigration Authority, the circumstances of the case justified an indictment and not the levying of an administrative fine. This is because the case allegedly involves a foreign worker who had a work permit for nursing, but who worked for a fairly extended period as a housekeeper."
