Enterprise data security developer Imperva Inc. unit Incapsula Ltd. yesterday launched the beta version of its cloud-based web application firewall (WAF) service.
Imperva was founded by CEO Shlomo Kramer, one of the three co-founders of Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: CHKP). Imperva spun off Incapsula a year ago and fully finances the company.
A simple calculation of Imperva's capital injections into Incapsula, assuming the cost of an engineer for one year as the main cost, suggests an investment of at least $1-2 million. This is not a small sum for a start-up, even a fairly well established company. Meanwhile, Imperva has been in talks with banks in recent months for a Wall Street IPO at a company value of $100 million.
Imperva develops data security solutions for enterprises, especially solutions for protecting databases against breaches. The company also has a web application firewall. The company targets large companies, and the solutions are sold on designated hardware facilities.
Incapsula VP marketing and business development Marc Gaffan said, "Incapsula provides a solution for a different market - small and mid-sized businesses, which cannot normally afford to invest designated hardware facilities for niche needs in communications."
