Prime ministers, poets the new faces on bills

The Bank of Israel will launch the new series of banknotes in 2012.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Prime Ministers Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Rabin, Nobel Prize for Literature Laureate Shai Agnon, and the poetess Rachel will be the figures on Israel's new banknotes, the Bank of Israel announced today.

Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Stanley Fischer looked to politics and culture for inspiration. "After a long process of consultation and discussions between the Judge Yaacov Turkel committee and the Governor, the Governor decided to incorporate two aspects of Israel's history, the political and the cultural, by depicting two politicians who signed peace agreements with Israel's neighbors, and two outstanding people in the fields of literature and poetry," stated the Bank of Israel.

"The Governor said that it was of historical importance, in particular for future generations, to denote the leaders of the nation, and the characters chosen convey an important lesson in Israel's heritage."

The Bank of Israel will launch the new series of banknotes in 2012 in denominations of 20, 50, 100 and 200 shekels. The new banknotes will incorporate state-of-the-art security and identification features among anti-counterfeiting measures.
