Israel's population nears 7.7m

The country's population rose 1.9% in 2010.

Israel's population rose by 1.9% in 2010 to 7.7 million people, the Central Bureau of Statistics reports. 165,000 babies were born during the year.

75.4% of Israel's population, 5.8 million people, are Jews. 20.4%, 1.57 million people, are Arabs, and 4.2% are classified as "others", primarily new immigrants and their families whom the Ministry of Interior does not define as Jewish (non-Arab Christians and residents whose religion is not classified). 19,000 new immigrants arrived during the year.

The population estimates does not include foreign residents in the country.

Israel's population increased by 143,000 people in 2010: 125,000 through natural increase (88% of the total) - 165,000 births, less 40,000 deaths.
