Comptroller slams Mossad for wasting money

The secret service was also criticized for lack of efficiency, and improper management.

For the first time ever, the Office of the State Comptroller has issued a report criticizing the Mossad intelligence service. In the report published today by State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss, uncovers serious flaws in the logistics division of the secret service, some of which are described as "most grave." The findings talk of "testifying to improper management, lack of efficiency and wasting money."

The State Comptroller devotes an entire chapter to the failings of the Mossad in a comprehensive report about the security forces. He is highly critical of the Mossad's extensive building activities at Glilot near Tel Aviv.

The report does not delve into operational matters or decision making by the Mossad, which are still shrouded in secrecy. The failings uncovered relate to the eight years in which the Mossad was headed by Meir Dagan, who was replaced earlier this year by Tamir Pardo.

Construction undertaken at the Mossad's Glilot headquarters included new offices and expanding the dining room at a cost of tens of millions of shekels. The Comptroller found that the Mossad ignored the master plan formulated with the architect it hired, and overspent and overbuilt.

The Comptroller also found that other building plans that were approved were not implemented and instead plans were adopted that led to a substantial increase in building costs.
