Israel's population 7.75m at 63rd anniversary

The population rose by 2%, or 155,000 people since last Independence Day.

Israel's population reached 7,746,000 at its 63rd Independence Day, up from 806,000 in 1948, the Central Bureau of Statistics reports. The population rose by 2%, or 155,000 people since last Independence Day.

178,000 babies were born since Israel's 62nd Independence Day, 43,000 people died, and 24,500 new immigrants and returning residents arrived. Net outward migration of Israelis was 12,000 people. 70% of the Jewish population are "sabras" (native-born), half of whom are second-generation sabras, double the proportion in 1948.

Israel has 5.84 million Jews (75.3% of the population), 1.59 million Arabs (20.5%0, and 322,000 others (non-Jewish immigrants and their children, according to the Ministry of Interior).
