Unemployment down to 6% in Q1

The labor force totaled 3.19 million people in the first quarter, and participation in the labor by people over the age of 15 was 57.4%.

The unemployment rate is nearing its all-time low. The unemployment rate fell to 6% of the civilian labor force in the first quarter of 2011, or 192,000 persons, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported today, down from 6.5% in the fourth quarter of 2010.

The labor force totaled 3.19 million people in the first quarter, and participation in the labor by people over the age of 15 was 57.4%. Participation in the labor force by men fell to 62% in the first quarter from 62.2% in the preceding quarter, and participation by women fell to 53% from 53.3%.

Participation in the labor force by people aged 25-64 fell to 75.7% in the first quarter from 76.1% in the preceding quarter Participation in the labor force by men in this age group fell to 81.4% in the first quarter from 81.9% in the preceding quarter, and participation by women fell to 70.1% from 70.5%.

The unemployment rate for men fell to 6.3% in the first quarter from 6.6% in the preceding quarter, and the unemployment rate for women fell to 5.7% from 6.3%. The unemployment rate for women has been lower than the rate for men since the third quarter of 2009.
