Shufersal CEO fails to defuse student boycott

Shufersal Ltd. (TASE:SAE) executives and leaders of the National Union of Israeli Students failed to reach a deal in their third meeting to end the students' planned boycott of the supermarket chain, scheduled to begin on Thursday. They agreed to meet again this afternoon.

Yesterday, the student leaders agreed to postpone the boycott to Thursday, after Tel Aviv Student Union chairman Ran Livne met Shufersal president and CEO Effi Rosenhaus.

The Student Union is behind the Facebook page, which is calling for the week-long Shufersal boycott, entitled, "A week without Shufersal. We're fighting for the fridge". 6,800 people have already joined the Facebook page. The student leaders dismissed Shufersal's price reductions on 1,600 items, saying that the reductions should be permanent.

At yesterday's meeting, Rosenhaus asked, "Am I a scapegoat?"

Livne replied, "Yes. You're the largest supermarket in Israel and the market toes your line."

The students are demanding permanent sharp reductions in prices.
