Nationwide rail strike cancelled

The deadlocked negotiations over privatization have been re-started thus averting next week's disruptions.

The Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) announced on Thursday night that next week's planned disruptions by Israel Railways employees had been called off. The railway workers had planned to seriously disrupt passenger and cargo traffic nationwide to protest the privatization of rolling stock maintenance.

But an agreement was reached to continue the deadlocked talks with Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini and Israel Railways chairman Ori Yogev supervising the progress.

The Histadrut had previously said that it was launching the disruptions because the lengthy negotiations with the Ministry of Finance and Railways management on the privatization of the rolling stock maintenance to Canada's Bombardier Inc. (TSX: BBD) was going nowhere.
