The Histadrut today petitioned the National Labor Court for permission to renew the general strike on behalf of contract workers.
The Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) today petitioned the National Labor Court for permission to renew the general strike on behalf of contract workers, after the month-long negotiations with the Ministry of Finance, employers, and Union of Local Authorities in Israel deadlocked. In the petition, the Histadrut asked for a hearing on Wednesday.
"We said at the onset of the struggle that we wanted to change the perception that there are two kinds of workers," said Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini. "The Ministry of Finance wants to continue privatizing labor and it now seems that only a strike will cause the ministry to become more flexible in its position."
The Histadrut held a general strike last month over contract workers. The Histadrut wants to minimize the number of contract workers by having them directly employed by companies and the government. A few days before the strike, the Economic Organizations Liaison Bureau petitioned the National Labor Court for an injunction against the strike, and President of the court Nili Arad limited the strike to four hours.
