Speed cameras launch delayed

The launch of the new digital speed cameras will be delayed until at least mid-February.

The launch of the new digital speed cameras has been delayed again, and operation of the new automatic system is unlikely to begin before mid-February.

The Ministry of Public Security said that it has not yet received an expert opinion by the Standards Institution of Israel that Malam Team Ltd. (TASE: MLTM), which is installing the system, was supposed to provide. Only after the opinion is submitted later this month will it be possible to operate the system. The ministry has not yet received the permits from Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) (TASE: ELEC.B22) and Israel National Roads Company Ltd. for each pole that will hold the new cameras.

A few days ago, the Standards Institution officially announced that it had given Malam Team a standard for the unmanned automatic traffic violations detection systems.

The Ministry of Public Security is considering, as an interim solution, to operate the new cameras on existing poles that carry analog film-based traffic cameras, which are located along Road 4 and on some roads in the north. The ministry said that most of analog cameras are already out of use, and will be replaced by the new digital cameras.

The NIS 150 million system was supposed to begin operations several months ago, and has been repeatedly postponed.
