Accel Partners, which has invested in successful companies like Facebook Inc. and Rovio Inc., is betting on an Israeli start-up. "TechCrunch" reports that Dragonplay Ltd. has raised $14 million in its first financing round led by Accel Partners, and joined Founder Collective and Entrée Capital.
Dragonplay was founded by Sharon Tal in 2010. The company is developing a platform for free-to-play social games for Android and Facebook. Its top-selling application is Live Hold'em Poker Pro for Android. Other games include Farm Slots, Live BlackJack, and Sea Battle.
Like other Israeli gaming companies, Dragonplay has been able to stay under the radar, even though its leading application has already had more than 12 million downloads, and two million people play Live Hold'em Poker Pro every month. It is one of the most popular applications at Google Inc.'s (Nasdaq: GOOG) Google Play.
Until now, Dragonplay has focused mainly on Android, and it plans to launch Poker applications for iPhones. The company says that the proceeds from the financing round will help it launch new games, expand to Apple Inc.'s (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS platform, hire employees, and enter the Asian games market.
