Dr. Guy Bechor: Syria's losers will be slaughtered

"The struggle in Syria will last for years, even if Bashar al-Assad goes."

"The struggle in Syria will last for years, even if Bashar al-Assad goes; new generals will come, and new and future gangs, or militias we do not yet know about will emerge," Dr. Guy Bechor told “IDF Radio" (Galei Zahal) in an analysis of the situation in Syria and the fighting between President Assad and the rebels.

"The losers in this fight in Syria will be slaughtered, so no one can let himself get close to failure," said Bechor. In explaining why the struggle will last for years, he said, "The ground beneath Syria is boiling, the fight is bitter, and it's a zero-sum game. The loser will simply cease to exist. There are so many more twists and turns facing this miserable country."

As for the stability of Assad's regime, Bechor said, "So long as Assad has Russia and Iran to help him, he's OK. But even if Assad goes, it won't be over."

As for the possibility that the Syrian regime might try to get Israel involved in Syria's internal affairs, Bechor said, "Let's not be naive. Every day, Assad's generals ask themselves how to involve Israel, and that's a card that will be kept for the very last days of the struggle."
