Hebrew University starts humanities building with $20.5m donation

The new building on Mount Scopus is being built following a contribution from the Mandel Foundation.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has received a $18 million donation from the Mandel Foundation to build a new humanities building at the Mount Scopus campus. The foundation also gave a $2.5 million grant for programs.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School for Advanced Studies in the Humanities was held yesterday. The Mandel School will be located on the northern edge of the Mount Scopus campus, next to the Mandel Institute of Jewish Studies in the Yitzhak Rabin Building. The 43,000-square-foot building will be built in accordance with US Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standard, and is due to open in 2014.

Lerman Architects Ltd. of Tel Aviv and Kallmann McKinnell and Wood Architects Inc. of Boston designed the building. The firm has designed several university buildings, including the Mandel Center for the Humanities at Brandeis University.
