Jerusalem police chief suspended over alleged sexual misconduct

Niso Shaham is suspected of sexual harassment, indecent acts, and improper consensual sexual relations with policewomen under his command

Jerusalem District Police commander Niso Shaham has been suspended on allegations of sexual harassment, indecent acts, and improper consensual sexual relations with policewomen under his command. Zion District commander Brig.-Gen. Nissim Edri has been sent on forced leave for not handling the complaints filed against Shaham. Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino suspended the officers.

The scandal emerged yesterday, when Shaham was suspended from his post, following an investigation, most of the details of which are still confidential under a gag order.

Jerusalem District Police Deputy Commander Maj.-Gen. Manny Yitzhaki has taken over Shaham's duties.

Shaham made headlines in January, when, following confrontations between the police and haredim (ultra-orthodox) in Jerusalem, haredi website "Behadrei Hadarim" displayed an image of Shaham as Adolf Hitler. Danino slammed the website for this act. Shaham also made right-wing enemies during the 2006 evacuation of Gush Katif.
