The average expenditure by a tourist in Israel was $1,497 in 2011, the Ministry of Tourism reported today in its Survey of Incoming Tourists. The average expenditure by a tourist who spent one day in Israel was $142; average expenditure by a tourist who arrived on a cruise was $230 per day; average expenditure by a tourist on an organized tour was $1,725; and the average expenditure by a tourist on a package deal was $1,539.

68% of tourists visiting Israel were average income-earners, 31% were above average income-earners, and 1% were below average income-earners. 58% of tourists were Christians, 25% were Jews, and 1% were Muslims. 52% of Christian tourists were Catholics and 21% were Protestants.

49% of tourists cited family and friends as the reason for visiting Israel. 39% of tourists said that their travel agent was their main source about Israel, and 27% said that the Internet was their main source of information.

41% of tourists were aged 25-44, and 22% were over than 55%, mainly pilgrims from Portugal and Austria.

61% of tourists in 2011 said that this was their first visit to Israel, and 39% said that it was a repeat visit. 82% of the tourists making a repeat visit were Jews, mainly to visit family and friends.
