The new plan for the 90-year old Beit Hakerem neighborhood will preserve its historic heritage.
The Jerusalem Local Planning and Building Commission last week approved for deposit a detailed outline plan for 1,400 new apartments in the city's Beit Hakerem neighborhood. The plan includes provisions for preserving its historic heritage and complying with the area's current urban fabric.
The plan divides Beit Hakerem into three districts: the historic district, where buildings cannot exceed three floors; the area bordering New Beit Hakerem, where buildings up to five floors may be built; and a third area along Herzl Boulevard, where buildings of 6-8 floors may be built. The plan includes public squares, pedestrian paths, and the use of low stone walls and trees bordering private properties.
Beit Hakerem was founded 90 years ago, and was originally designed by Richard Kaufman. The neighborhood currently has 8,000 residents.
