Former finance minister completes prison sentence

Avraham Hirschson was convicted of embezzlement from the Histadrut National Workers Union when he served as its chairman.

"I am now going to thank God for getting me out in good health, to hug my family, and thank my close friends who helped me. As for all the rest, there will be a time and place, when I will say what I want," said former Minister of Finance Avraham Hirschson on his release from jail today, after serving 3.5 years.

Hirschson (72) was convicted of embezzlement from the Histadrut National Workers Union when he served as its chairman. In June 2009, the Tel Aviv District Court sentenced him to 65 months in jail, and a NIS 450,000 fine, after convicting him of embezzling between NIS 1.73 million and NIS 1.9 million from the union. It was the harshest sentence ever against an Israeli public official up to that time.
