Telit launches new mobile car phone

Telit's Israeli team developed the RoadStar's software and the company's Italian team developed its hardware.

Telit Communications plc (AIM:TCM) launched the RoadStar, its new mobile car phone, at the Barcelona World Mobile Congress. The RoadStar is the latest version of the company's RoadRunner mobile car phone, first launched in Israel four years ago.

Telit's Israeli team developed the RoadStar's software and the company's Italian team developed its hardware. The RoadStar has 3.5G connectivity, compared with the 2.5G for previous RoadRunner models. The upgrade enables the RoadStar to work with more Israeli mobile networks. The new phone offers over-the-air Google synchronization for the user's contact list, as well as by the phone's SIM card.

Externally, the RoadStar is identical to the RoadRunner, with a large keyboard and high-speed activation on the road. It also has the old Telmap GPS navigation system (without traffic congestion reports), and the new Pointer Telocation Systems Ltd. (Nasdaq:PNTR; TASE:PNTR) app to see the car's location on the road via an Internet browser or smartphone.

The RoadStar requires an additional SIM card for the phone line to use, a capability currently available in Israel only via mobile carriers Cellcom Israel Ltd. (NYSE:CEL; TASE:CEL), Partner Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTNR; TASE: PTNR), and Pelephone Communications Ltd..

The RoadStar costs NIS 1,200 at Motorola Center's points of sale, and will be available via some carriers in a few weeks.
