Defense funds conditioned on shorter military service

Military service for men will be shortened to two years and four months under the final 2013 Economic Arrangements bill.

As "Globes" reported, military service for men will be shortened to two years and four months under the final 2013 Economic Arrangements bill, which will be submitted within days. The final draft, revealed by "Channel 10", states that part of the defense budget will be subject to the shortening of military service from July.

The Ministry of Finance is also demanding that the IDF increase the draft of haredim (ultra-orthodox) and reduce monthly payments to some wounded veterans who are treated by the Rehabilitation Branch, in accordance with the recommendations of the government committee on the subject. The ministry has made these demands as a condition for the transfer of funds to the IDF.

As part of the attempt to oversee the defense budget, the Ministry of Finance will oblige the IDF chief of staff to submit any financial statement that the ministry demands, within ten days.

The 2013 Economic Arrangements bill will also include the Wisconsin welfare-to-work plan, requiring the unemployed to go to placement centers operated by private companies. Anyone refusing to participate in the plan will lose their rights to welfare payments from the National Insurance Institute.
