Jan-April deficit soars 75%

The government deficit rose to NIS 7.7 billion in January-April from NIS 4.4 billion in the corresponding period of 2012.

The government deficit rose 75% to NIS 7.7 billion in January-April 2013 from NIS 4.4 billion in the corresponding period of 2012, the Ministry of Finance announced today. The deficit in April was NIS 3 billion, bringing the deficit for the preceding 12 months to NIS 42.3 billion, or 4.5% of GDP.

Government spending in April totaled NIS 24 billion, including NIS 19.3 billion in spending by ministries, and NIS 4.7 billion in interest payments. Spending by ministries totaled NIS 71 billion in January-April, 4% more than during the corresponding period. Defense spending fell by 3.9%, but spending by civilian ministries rose by 6.9%.

Tax revenues rose to NIS 18.5 billion in April from NIS 17 billion in April 2012. Tax revenues totaled NIS 75.9 billion in January-April, up 1.6% over the corresponding period.
