On the eve of Rosh Hashana 5774, Israel's population reached 8.08 million, including 6.07 million Jews, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported today. Israel's population grew by 142,000 people in 5773: 163,000 babies were born, 40,000 people died, and the net immigration balance was 19,000 people. The growth rate was 1.8%, the same as in previous years.

Jews accounted for 75.1% of Israel's population. Arabs totaled 1.67 million, 20.7% of the population, and "others" (non-Arab Christians, members of other religions, and people with no stated religion) totaled 345,000 people. Israel also has 200,000 foreign workers, migrant workers, and refugees.

The Palestinian population is over three million, of whom two million live in the West Bank and over one million in the Gaza Strip.
