Power plant breakdowns cause outages

Power outages were felt across the country due to two malfunctions at the Gezer power station.

At 8:22 AM two production units at the Israel Electric Corporation's (IEC) Gezer site were shut down, due to a malfunction in an Israel Natural Gas Lines, ltd. (INGL) facility. At the same time, there was a malfunction at the OPC power station, Israel Corps' privately held power plant, which started producing electricity in June.

The power plant in Gezer is responsible for providing roughly 8% of the electricity in Israel and together with OPC, roughly 10%. Both of the stations are powered by gas.

"Due to the outages of the production units, power outages were felt across the country for durations of 10-30 minutes," reported IEC.

At roughly 9:10 AM power was restored to all customers.

INGL stated in response: "Due to inconsistencies in the power supply from the national grid, there was a malfunction at the facility in Gezer, near the Gezer Power Plant. The malfunction lasted roughly five minutes, during which time the transport of gas to the Israel Electric Corp's power plant in Gezer was partially interrupted. The company's operations teams are on the ground investigating the matter."
