Barkat leads Jerusalem mayor race

A poll by the Smith Institute for "Globes" and "The Jerusalem Post" found Nir Barkat's lead over Moshe Lion narrowing.

Five days before Israel's municipal elections, the battle for Jerusalem's mayor between incumbent Mayor Nir Barkat and challenger Moshe Lion is heating up. The gap between Leon, who is backed by Shas co-chairman MK Aryeh Deri and Yisrael Beitenu chairman MK Avigdor Liberman, has narrowed to 6%.

A poll by the Smith Institute for "Globes" and "The Jerusalem Post" found Barkat with 47% of the vote and Lion with 41%.

Just two months ago, when Moshe Lion's name was first mooted, it was followed by the question, "Moshe who?" and pollsters gave him just single-digit percentage of the vote. That single-digit is now the gap between the candidates.
