Cabinet unanimously approves Karnit Flug as BoI Governor

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: Karnit Flug has the appropriate background and experience.

The cabinet today unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Karnit Flug as Governor of the Bank of Israel.

"Karnit Flug has the appropriate background and experience and she has fulfilled her position [as Acting Governor] in recent months very well," said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "In addition to the fact that we are successfully navigating the Israeli economy in the face of the global crisis, Israel's economic leadership must continue to advance growth and employment, increase exports and lower housing prices. We wish Karnit Flug success."

In July 2011, then-Governor of the Bank of Israel Stanley Fischer appointed Flug as deputy governor. After Fischer resigned at the end of June, Flug was appointed Acting Governor. Fischer recommended her as his successor, but Netanyahu said that he did not agree with her economic policy. Following the nomination of Bank Hapoalim chief economist Leo Liederman to the post, Flug announced that she would leave the Bank of Israel. Instead, she is now heading the bank officially and permanently.
