Herzog wins Labor contest

Challenger Isaac Herzog defeated Shelly Yachimovich by a margin of over 16% in the Labor Party leadership election.

Change at the top of the Labor Party: MK Isaac ('Buji') Herzog has beaten incumbent chair Shelly Yachimovich in the party's leadership election, held yesterday. Herzog took 60% of the vote, and won by a margin of over 16%.

This morning, Yachimovich called the new party chairman and promised to cooperate with him fully in the future. She added that she respected the party's democratic decision, and that the contest had been a fair one.

Herzog wrote on his Facebook page that he saw Yachimovich as "a central and important partner for the party's success", adding "Friends, this is only the start. Today we begin a real campaign to change the face of the country. Heartfelt thanks to you all. We have a great deal of work before us. Together, we shall win."

Herzog received congratulations from MK Eli Yishai of Shas, who said, "Shas and the Labor Party must continue to cooperate and present a worthy alternative to the government that has in view the future of the people and the obligation to preserve its unity." Habayit Hayehudi leader Naftali Bennett also spoke with Herzog. He wished him success, and said, "We have known cooperation with the historic Labor Party and I hope that we shall find many ways of cooperating for the sake of the people of Israel today as well."
