The Technion has been among the top 100 for seven consecutive years.

After Israeli universities fell last year in the ShanghaiRanking rating, matters improved this year. The list of the world's 100 leading universities including Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in 77th place, up from 93rd place in 2017, while the Hebrew University of Jerusalem reached 95th place, after falling out of the 100 universities in 2017.

ShanghaiRanking is one of the world's leading university ratings in which 1.200 universities are assessed, from which the 500 leading ones are selected. The rating is based on several measures, including the number of faculty members and graduates who won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of times an article by a researcher at a university appears in leading scientific periodicals, and the number of times that researchers at an institution were quoted by their colleagues. The rating of the top 10 universities remained unchanged, headed by Harvard, Stanford, Cambridge, MIT, and University of California At Berkley.

"A rising trend in the ShanghaiRanking from last year is evidence of hard work and uncompromising striving for excellence by members of the academic community and the university," Hebrew University President Prof. Asher Cohen said after the ShanghaiRanking list was published.

Cohen added, "The competition is become more difficult each year, especially in view of the large investments by East Asian countries in universities in comparison with Israel. Nevertheless, members of the academic community and the university are successfully maintaining the high quality and level of research in Israel in accordance with Hebrew University's mission of being the leader in research in Israel and among the world leaders in research."

Technion President Prof. Peretz Lavie said, "Technion's presence among the top 100 universities for seven consecutive years is the result of the hard and dedicated work by its management, faculty members, and employees. We select the faculty members carefully according to a single criterion - excellence - and this has proven successful.

"In order to reinforce Technion's status as a leading global research-scientific-technological university, we are also working on the global front - a strategy in which we inaugurated late least year the Jacobs Technion-Cornell institute (JTCI) in New York and the Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) in China. Regardless of the international ratings, we are constantly measuring and improving ourselves, but it is clear that a high place in the ShanghaiRanking ratings is exciting international conformation of Technion's excellence."
